Last of the young turks after Chandra Shekhar, the then Prime Minister, and Krishna Kant, the then Vice President of India, Mohan Dharia breathed his last at Pune day before yesterday. He was 88 years old. A close associate of Chandra Shekhar, the then Indian Prime Minister, he was known for his socialistic ideology. He was a Minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet and also in the cabinet of Morarji Desai when he became the Prime Minister. He was the Vice Chairman of Planning Commission during the time Chandra Shekhar was the Prime Minister. He was always straightforward and never compromised his convictions. In whatever capacity he worked his credentials remained above board unlike the scenario that obtains in political arena of activities in the country now. He stuck to his principles to the last and was the first ever minister who created history by resigning from Indira Gandhi’s cabinet when she promulgated Emergency in the country to join the well known great movement launched by Jai Prakash Narayan against the then Indian government and the political forces which according to him and many were not working in the interest of the people of the country. In him, the country will miss a great crusader. Wish peace to the great departed soul.
