Many a Lord Budhas, many a Mahatma Gandhis and many a Raja Ram Mohan Roys would take birth on this earth and die but the heinous crimes like rapes and gangrapes are not going to stop; it has been continuing since ages and may go on like this for times immemorial. As if perpetrating an act like rape or gangrape is not enough, there are Panchayats who are using it as a tool for awarding punishment. In Virbhumi district of West Bengal, a tribal woman aged 20 years was the victim of such a decision by the panchayat of a local village called Labhpur. The crime of the tribal girl was that she was more friendly with a boy belonging to some other caste. The local Panchayat called its urgent session and pronounced the verdict that the two families of the girl and also the boy be directed to pay a penalty of Rs.25,000/ each. The boy’s family could manage to pay the fine but the family of the girl could somehow manage only Rs.3,000/ expressing their inability to pay the balance amount. The Panchayat got annoyed and they ordered that the girl be gangraped by a dozen of people forthwith. The order was instantly complied with and the girl was gangraped in full view of the village people as a whole. The girl is in a local hospital fighting for her life. Astonishingly the Panchayat was hailed by its supporters for a befitting punishment awarded to the girl for having familiar relations with an outsider. This is the type of the world which we are living in at the outset of the 21st century where there is no dearth of people crying hoarse at the top of their voice on various achievements on social reforms. In fact incidents like this are just a slap on the face of the so called social reformers in the country besides those who are holding the charge of law and order.
